#KPI Headlines:

  • Scoring and Pace Have Leveled Off: Weekly scoring has level off as to where weekly scoring averages have hovered between 69.5 PPG and 69.9 PPG each of the last five weeks.  The average margin of games has been between 10.7 and 10.8 PPG in four of the five weeks.  Possessions per game (and hence pace) has averaged between 66.0 and 66.5 possessions per game each of the last six weeks.
  • The American: Gary Parrish wrote that the bottom of the American is actually helping the top of the conference. The #KPI numbers disagree.  The top five teams average #KPI is No. 33 and averages to .203.  The bottom five teams average #KPI is No. 207 and averages to -.028.  The average #KPI value for a top five team facing a bottom five team is .135 in road games and .112 in home games.  The average #KPI value when two top five American teams play each other is .342.
  • Pay attention not only to 1-68 rankings, but how close teams are (or aren’t) to the team ranked below and above them.  Arizona, Kansas and Wisconsin have separated themselves from the pack at the top, whereas the gap between No. 10 and No. 17 totals .009.
  • Road Wins in Conference Play: The WAC (28-29, .491), Big South (38-46, .452), Big Ten (38-47, .447), America East (28-36, .438) and American (31-40, .437) are the top-5 conferences in terms of road winning percentage conference play.  The five most difficult conferences to win on the road are the SEC (29-69, .296), Big Sky (26-61, .299), Missouri Valley (24-56, .300), Pac-12 (27-58, .318) and Ivy League (13-26, .333)
  • Strength of the SEC: UKAthletics.com released numbers regarding the strength of the SEC.  The SEC has 9 teams in the top-100 of the #KPI, which is 64% of the conference members.  The ACC has 9 of 15 (60%), Atlantic 10 has 8 of 13 (62%), Big 12 has 8 of 10 (80%), Big East 7 of 10 (70%), Big Ten 9 of 12 (75%) and Pac-12 9 of 12 (75%).  The number of teams in the conference matter.  When the Big East got 11 of 16 teams in the NCAA Tournament a few years back, it was a record.  It was a record aided by the largest conference in college basketball at the time.  The SEC has some real good teams, but has been heard by its inability to win on the road (34-87, .281 overall for 29th best of 32 conferences).  The SEC went 5-18 in non-conference road games.
  • The top-10 teams in the #KPI also appear in the top-10 when calculating #KPI against top-100 teams only.  Bottom line, quality wins put you at the top.
  • Davidson (+15), VMI (+15), Baylor (+14), SMU (+14), BYU (+12), Middle Tennessee (+10) and Iona (+10) had the largest #KPI increase among teams currently in the #KPI field over the last week.  Western Michigan moved up 23 spots to No. 72.
  • Rankings aren’t always as simple as head-to-head matchups:  No. 7 Creighton has beaten No. 5 Villanova twice this year.  However, Villanova is 24-1 in other games while Creighton is 21-4 in other games.  The two Creighton wins shrinks the 3-game difference to .021 #KPI, but that’s not enough to pass them (https://twitter.com/jppalmCBS/status/437781664841076736).

Points Per Game: Up 5.1% (3.44 PPG); from 67.5 PPG to 70.9 PPG. Through this time last season, teams were averaging 67.2 PPG (up 5.6% this year over the same time period). This is the highest scoring average since 2001-02 (71.26 PPG).  Points Per Possession have increased at a rate of 3.1%.  In 2012-13, scoring decreased 0.9 PPG (1.3%) between non-conference and conference play.  In 2013-14, scoring has decreased 2.3 PPG (3.2%) from 72.1 PPG in non-conference to 69.8 PPG in conference.

In 2012-13, 52.3% of points came from made 2-pt FGs, 27.4% from made 3-pt FGs and 20.3% from made free throws.  In 2013-14, 51.2% of points have come from made 2-pt FGs, 26.8% from made 3-pt FGs and 22.0% from made free throws.  The net increase is +1.04 points from made 2′s, +0.47 points from made 3′s and +1.92 points from made free throws.  In conference games only this year, 50.9% of points come from made 2-pt FGs, 26.9% from made 3′s and 22.3% from made free throws.

Average Margin Per Game: +13.4 PPG: The average margin in 2012-13 was +13.1 PPG, but was +13.5 PPG through the same period last season.  The average margin in non-conference play is 16.3 PPG compared to 10.5 PPG in conference play.  25.7% of games have been decided by 5 points or less, 49.5% of games have been decided by 10 points or less and 20.0% of games have been decided by more than 20 points.

Possessions Per Game: Up 1.9% (1.29 possession per game); from 66.7 to 68.0 possessions per game per team.  Possessions are 2.8 possessions per game lower (down 4.0%) in conference play than non-conference play this year.

Field Goal Attempts: Up 1.3% (0.69 FGA per game); from 55.0 to 55.7 FGA: Team field goal percentage is at 44.0%, up from 43.3% last year.  Field goals made are up 2.8% (0.68 per game). Field goal attempts are at their highest mark since 2002-03 (56.4 FGA/game).  Teams are attempting 2.35 fewer field goals in conference play than non-conference (down 4.1%), but FGAs are only down 0.1% per possession in conference play.

3-pt Field Goal Attempts: Up 1.3% (0.24 3-ptA per game); from 18.1 to 18.4 3-ptA: 3-pt field goal percentage is at 34.5%, up from 34.1% last year.  3-pt field goal attempts are at their highest number since an all-time high in 2007-08 (19.1 per game).

Free Throw Attempts: Up 13.5% (2.67 FTA per game); from 19.8 to 22.4 FTA: Team free throw percentage is at 69.6% (69.3% last year).  Teams are making 1.92 more free throws per game this year (up 14.0%).  Free throw attempts are at their highest mark since 1993-94 (23.2 FTA/game).  Free Throw Attempts fell from 23.5 in November to 21.9 in December, but rose to 22.3 per game in January.  Teams are averaging 21.8 FTAs in February.

Turnovers: Down 5.2% (0.69 turnovers per game); 13.3 to 12.6 turnovers: Turnovers per possession are down 7.0% while steals per possession are down 8.8%.  More plays that used to be steals/turnovers are being called fouls.

Personal Fouls: Up 8.9% (1.57 fouls per game); 17.7 to 19.3 fouls: Personal fouls are at their highest mark since 2000-01 (19.92 fouls per game).  Fouls per possession are up 6.8%.  Fouls are down 2.6% per possession from non-conference to conference this season.

Overall data differs slightly from NCAA data due to inclusion of games involving Division-I teams vs. Non Division-I teams, currently 4.9% of the data.
