WEEK 13 #KPI BASKETBALL (as of 2/3/14)

#KPI Headlines:

  • Losses at the Top: 14 of the current top-25 #KPI teams lost at least one game last week. 4 current top-25 #KPI teams went 0-2 last week.  8 of the 18 losses came against fellow top-25 teams.  There were 18 games played among top-50 #KPI teams (the current cut line for an at-large bid).  There are 15 such games scheduled this week.
  • …But Consistency at the Top: The top-4 of the #KPI is made up of the only teams who are in the top-10 in both conference and non-conference #KPI.  #1 Arizona (No. 2 non-conf, No. 6 conf), #2 Kansas (No. 8 non-conf, No. 1 conf), #3 Villanova (No. 7 non-conf, No. 5 conf), #4 Syracuse (No. 6 non-conf, No. 8 conf).
  • Relax:  There becomes an expectation that good teams can’t lose this time of year.  The four No. 1 seeds in last year’s tournament combined for 18 losses (2, 5, 6, 6).  No. 2 seeds combined for 24 losses and No. 3 seeds combined for 28 losses.  13 teams with 10 or more losses made the tournament as an at-large!  The good is never as good as it seems and the bad is never as bad as it seems.  Each game will be 1/32 or so of each team’s resume.
  • Relax, Part Two: #KPI No. 7 Wisconsin, No. 15 Iowa State, No. 19 Ohio State, No. 23 Oklahoma State, No. 34 Oregon, No. 35 North Carolina, No. 39 Florida State, No. 41 Missouri, No. 44 Minnesota and No. 48 Dayton are at or below .500 in conference play, yet are currently in the #KPI field.  The non-conference is valued more than conference right now simply because more non-conference games have been played.
  • Make Me a Bracket: I’m very proud to have been included in this year’s Bracket Project.  While my data is only by math (no brain), it allows an opportunity to see what teams the formula likes or dislikes more.  The math likes teams like Wisconsin (they did beat Virginia and Florida, remember … those mean something!) and Massachusetts (they beat Providence, New Mexico, LSU, Clemson, Nebraska and BYU in the non-conference!).  The math hasn’t caught up to teams like San Diego State and Iowa.  Iowa’s remaining #KPI strength of schedule is No. 7.  Their schedule is simply backloaded.
  • Extra Session: There were a season-high 18 overtime games on Saturday, February 1.  None of them went beyond one OT.  Teams averaged 79.3 PPG in those 18 games with an average margin of 4.7 PPG.
  • Free Throw Volume: Quinnipiac attempted 65 free throws Saturday night at Quinnipiac, tying Morehead State’s season-high 65 attempts on November 17 vs. Marshall.  Both games went to overtime.
  • 34% of games in Week 13 (Jan 27-Feb 2) were determined by 5 points or less.  59% of games were determined by 10 points or less and 92% of games were decided by 20 points or less.
  • 11 teams remain unbeaten in conference play (Syracuse, Wichita State, Florida, Cincinnati, San Diego State, Saint Louis, Harvard, Stephen F. Austin, Delaware, Georgia State and American)
  • Four teams have 10 road/neutral wins: Villanova (10-1), Michigan State (10-1), Stephen F. Austin (10-2) and Southern Miss (10-3).
